Sue Overton PPP Columnist So here we are! The end of the school year, the end of spring, the beginning of summer, and about two months until school starts again! Six months until Christmas and seven until 2024. There seems to be a lot to do between now and then, whenever YOUR “then” is. Let’s not forget to slow down and smell the wildflowers or the roses or the poinsettias or whatever. Hug those kids, parents, friends! This weekend we will celebrate Memorial Day. Named so to celebrate those who gave their lives to the preservation of freedom. Some consider it the beginning of summer, but they should read up on it. It’s so much more. Wreaths and flags on gravesites of U.S. Veterans seem very insignificant considering what they gave. I don’t think anyone who did not live through the horrors of war have any idea what they sacrificed. “Rest in peace” does not begin to comfort the loved ones of these soldiers. So before you go to the lake, fire up the smoker, launch the boat, open that first beer, bow your head and thank God who created these brave souls, for the freedom to do any and all of the above mentioned. Stay safe. What are we going to do about gun violence in our fair state and beyond? Every night on the news one or more people have died or been seriously injured by someone wielding a gun. Save your emails! I am NOT in favor of taking away the right to bear arms. What good would that do? If someone wants to get their hands on a gun they can buy it on the street or steal it. Will heavier gun regulations make a difference? Maybe or maybe not. Somehow we must find a way to instill in the next generation the sanctity and value of human life. Think about it. S.
