Ole Heifer: Thanks, Jim – R.I.P.

Ole Heifer

Here we go into the heart of the winter social season.

If you’re shopping for Christmas or other holiday gifts, consider a subscription to the Palo Pinto Press.

Maybe send it as a Valentine which lasts for one or two years. Why not?

This Ole Heifer can’t begin to list all the loyal subscribers who have renewed or updated their subscriptions this fall.

You are so appreciated.

One of the most enjoyable parts of this job is catching up with subscribers and what they’ve been doing recently.

Among others, Sammye Smith has been back on the golf course and recently took a trip to the Big Bend. Like many of the Press family of readers, Sammye loves her hometown.

She’s a big sports fan and keeps up with the teams all across the county which are featured in the newspaper’s sports section.

Kudos to Sports Editor Kellci Ford, and best wishes to her, Sammye and numerous others in the reader family who travel many miles to support young athletes.

On a sad note, readers are going to miss the sports section contributions of Jim Slattery. He was a beloved member of this newspaper family, contributing both photos and information to the Press.

Jim always emphasized participation in sports as being one of the best ways to build character. And he was a wonderful and colorful character in his own right from his days of professional rodeo to his professorship at Tarleton and throughout his retirement years here in Mineral Wells.

So here’s to James Edward Slattery, Sr., AKA “Mr. Nice Guy” – may he rest in peace.
