BAY CITY, TX — Another MWHS Alumni is in the spotlight this week! After recognizing 2 former Rams football players this past week, we also were introduced to another story coming out of Bay City, Texas. MW Ram Alumni Edward “Eddie” Nelson, also known as “Catnip” Nelson, and his family are rallying for the honor of having the high school gymnasium in Bay City, TX to be named for him. Mr. Nelson had a very decorative athletic career at MWHS and was inducted in to the MWHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999 for his basketball heroics. According to his wife Mary Helen, upon graduating MWHS he went on to college and earned his Associates degree from Lon Morris Junior College, then on to Bachelor of Science from Howard Payne University and eventually obtaining a Master’s degree from Prairie View A&M. From there Mr. Nelson was on to coaching basketball. His start came from his former college stomping grounds, Howard Payne University where was the Assistant Coach for one year before being employed by Bay City High School in 1972 where he coached the Blackcats for 36 years. He led BHS to a 745-357 record during his time there including 16 District Championships, 13 Bi-District Championships, 12 Area Championships, 5 Regional Championships, 6 Regional Finalist, 5 State Appearances, 4 State Semi-Finals, 1 State Semi-Final Championship, and 1 State Championship in 1985. In 1985, Coach Nelson received a certificate of Special Congressional Recognition and Excellence by the Texas House of Representatives and the Texas State Senate. He was named to Who’s Who in American Basketball, Top 50 Elite Programs in America, and Recognized by Texas High School Coaches Association. He also received the “Mountaineer” Award from MW Booster Club soon after and was named Coach of the Year 16 times and Coach of the Decade, awarded by The Houston area 4-AAAA Basketball Association.
