Mineral Wells alumni seeking help in renaming of Bay City ISD gym

BAY CITY, TX — Another MWHS Alumni is in the spotlight this week! After recognizing 2 former Rams football players this past week, we also were introduced to another story coming out of Bay City, Texas. MW Ram Alumni Edward “Eddie” Nelson, also known as “Catnip” Nelson, and his family are rallying for the honor of having the high school gymnasium in Bay City, TX to be named for him. Mr. Nelson had a very decorative athletic career at MWHS and was inducted in to the MWHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999 for his basketball heroics. According to his wife Mary Helen, upon graduating MWHS he went on to college and earned his Associates degree from Lon Morris Junior College, then on to Bachelor of Science from Howard Payne University and eventually obtaining a Master’s degree from Prairie View A&M. From there Mr. Nelson was on to coaching basketball. His start came from his former college stomping grounds, Howard Payne University where was the Assistant Coach for one year before being employed by Bay City High School in 1972 where he coached the Blackcats for 36 years. He led BHS to a 745-357 record during his time there including 16 District Championships, 13 Bi-District Championships, 12 Area Championships, 5 Regional Championships, 6 Regional Finalist, 5 State Appearances, 4 State Semi-Finals, 1 State Semi-Final Championship, and 1 State Championship in 1985. He was named to Who’s Who in American Basketball, Top 50 Elite Programs in America, and Recognized by Texas High School Coaches Association. He also received the “Mountaineer” Award from MW Booster Club soon after and was named Coach of the Year 16 times and Coach of the Decade, awarded by The Houston area 4-AAAA Basketball Association. All his hard work and dedication didn’t just rack up his own personal accolades though. Eddie coached

Full circle moment for two former Rams

MINERAL WELLS — The Mineral Wells Rams and their fans welcomed two very special guests to the field Friday night for the coin toss before their match up with the Gatesville Hornets. These two men were no strangers to meeting at the 50-yard line for coin tosses, it has just been 68 years since they did it last. The Rams captains from the 1954 Rams football team, Charlie Bond and Charles Garland teamed up with the current Ram captains, Jonathan Hammer, Blake Blue, Mason Facteau, and Omar Galvan for the coin toss marking the first time the two former rams had been on the football field together since that ’54 season which at that time was being played at Miller Stadium on the southwest side of Mineral Wells and was the home field for the Rams until “Ram Stadium” was completed in 2008. Also serving as captains beside Charles and Charlie during that 1954 season was Jack Wampler and Carl Knight.
