Mineral Wells athletes shine in all-inclusive leagues While high school football is king in Texas and has the main stage for the moment, there are athletes getting ready to take the court for an inclusion basketball league, hosted by Able Oaks Farms and their founder, Sheena Chan. “In a nutshell, the goal is to serve individuals with varying learning abilities and demonstrate what it means to be a community that values all individuals. I have observed that, on too many occasions, people are faced with a situation where they do not know what they do not know. I simply mean that as a society our expectation for individuals with disabilities must be that we know that just as we, people without special needs, have purpose, so do they, people with special needs have purpose! We are all here on purpose and for great purpose.” Said Chan when asked about what the heart was behind this league. She continued by saying, “Our mission is to exemplify and teach what it means to treat others how we want to be treated. I can tell you firsthand, that it is individuals with special needs that have taught me more about life and how to properly treat others than any person without a special need.” The Mineral Wells Rams Inclusion League, which partners with Mineral Wells Youth Sports Association, plays their games on Saturdays, beginning in January. Registration is sponsored and there are no practices. It is open to 4th grade students up to adults, as well as volunteers known as “buddies” to assist some of the individuals on the court.
