From Staff Reports
WACO—The Government Finance Officers Association announced today that the Brazos River Authority won the agency’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its budget.
The award represents a significant achievement by the BRA. It reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting, according to the GFOA.
“Award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments throughout North America,” a Dec. 10 GFOA press release stated.
To receive the budget award, the BRA was required to meet nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity’s budget serves as:
- a policy document
- a financial plan
- an operations guide
- a communications device
Budget documents must be rated “proficient” in all four categories and the fourteen mandatory criteria within those categories to receive the award.
BRA Spokeswoman Judi Pierce said the GFOA considered hundreds of submissions for the award.
“As part of the notice, the BRA also received special recognition for the organization’s Long-Range Operating Financial Plan,” Pierce noted. “According to the GFOA, only 6% of the over 1,700 budget submissions receive this special recognition. The BRA is one of only four in Texas to be recognized for their long-range plan.”
The most recent Budget Award recipients, along with their corresponding budget documents, are posted quarterly on GFOA’s website at www.gfoa.org.
