In 2015, those of us who worked on the Back Pack Buddies program became very aware that we must have some kind of fundraiser. Mineral Wells Idol had been done before but it had been quite a few years, so we decided to try it again.
The first one was held in the White’s Funeral Home parking lot. The stage was a flatbed trailer and the electricity was strung across the street from the First United Methodist Church.
Spectators brought their own chairs and even their umbrellas. And yes, it rained but just briefly.
Church members cooked food, set up a concession stand and helped count the votes. Back Pack Buddies raised some money and we have been doing this ever since. This is the tenth anniversary of the annual event and we intend for it to be the biggest and best!
The contest has been held in the parking lot of Coffee and Cocktails the last three years and will be again this year. Adam Hull has always been our MC as he will be again. Hey, have y’all heard Adam’s new recording?? “Living Crazy in a Crazy Town” is a great song and the video is near and dear to all our hearts!
Oops! I got off subject. Back to MW Idol. There will be threee judges as always and there will be two categories: Judges Choice and Peoples Choice. Winners in both categories will receive $200, a trophy and a spot on the stage at the Crazy Water Festival in October.
Some details for you: Admission is free, food trucks will be available, tables and chairs will be provided or you can sit under the covered patio at Coffee and Cocktails. You may also bring your own chairs. The voting is by monetary support for the contestant of your choice and ALL money goes directly to buy food to feed the food insecure children of Mineral Wells.
Something I have not mentioned is the 50/50 raffle. Tickets are one ticket for $5, five tickets for $20, or 15 tickets for $50. The pot will be split at the end of the evening.
At this time Back Pack Buddies is feeding almost 400 students on the weekends at a cost of around $1200 per week. Please be generous. NO child should go to bed hungry!

Entry fee is $20. If you can sing, dance, tell jokes, play an instrument, juggle or stand on your head, ENTER! It’s for a good cause and who knows, you may start a whole new career! Age is not a factor. Talent begins at 6:30 on June 7.
