Water is life

Years ago, on a veterinary mission trip to Haiti, I was astonished when I witnessed a daily routine in the village where we worked. Early in the mornings, villagers walked for miles and miles to a stream to gather water. They carried huge jars, filled them up with water, and balanced them on the tops of their heads to make the journey homeward.

We need joy!

Joy! That’s not a word we hear much these days, it’s almost an unspoken wish for many of us. Looking at things naturally you would think there’s not much about which to be joyful, however those who took Thanksgiving seriously a few weeks ago realized that they were there were many things for which we should be grateful.

Is it the right gift?

First of all, this article does not oppose adopting, or buying a dog or puppy, for Christmas - instead, it asks the question: “Is it the right gift right now?” While many children wish for a dog at Christmas - and Shelter Dogs have been wishing for loving homes all year - there are things to consider. Consider that a dog is a commitment for 10-to-15 years.

Santa’s progeny

“Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.” Haven’t we just heard that all our lives! And the letter is a beautiful one published on the editorial page of the New York Sun in 1897. But, I believe, that whole message must have missed Stephenville, Texas, or they forgot it by the 1940’s! Or, at the very least, it missed my family ‘cause during the War.

THE IDLE AMERICAN

Umpteen years ago, I entitled a speech—cleverly I thought at the time—”From Adam’s Rib to Women’s Lib.” I provided more details than audiences wanted to know, explaining that with such an expansive title, maybe I wouldn’t wander too far off track.
