The Idle American: The road taken…

I, as well as most others who string words together, will never be confused with Robert Frost, the poetry genius from whose pen flowed marvelous words about his beloved New England. One of his best-published in the Atlantic Monthly in 1915--was “The Road Not Taken.” Actually, it was intended as a joke to a writer friend.

You do you…

Life is difficult enough without comparing our lives to anyone else’s existence and I wonder if social media is damaging the self esteem of not only our young people, but people of all ages. After all, our self-esteem isn’t directly correlated with our age. The act of comparison means that something or someone will come up short. Or as my Grandpa Harpole used to say, “Come up a shorty horse.”

Life and other stuff: Human connection

My mom was 13 years old at the beginning of World War II. She loves to tell how she and her friends ran toward the tracks whenever a troop train rolled past. They scrambled to pick up scraps of paper scribbled with names and mailing addresses which deploying soldiers threw from their windows. The girls faithfully wrote those boys throughout the war. Some of the letters they received back even contained marriage proposals – Mom tallied three by the time she turned seventeen!

God? Why?

Seems in this era, the last 50 years actually, God has been more and more irrelevant to many people. They will say, “Yes, I believe there’s a god somewhere, but I don’t think he pays any attention to what goes on here on this planet. If He did, we would not be in such a mess.”
