Celebration of Life for George Washington Daugherty, Nov. 3

Staff Reports

MINERAL WELLS – A celebration of life for the Mineral Wells man killed in a fatal accident last month is scheduled for Nov. 3.

The service for George Washington Daugherty starts at 3 p.m. at Mineral Wells Nursing and Rehabilitation, 316 SW 25th Ave.

Daugherty died after being hit by a driver in the 6200 block of U.S. Highway 180 East, in Parker County, Sept. 21. He was 77 years old.

The following day, Palo Pinto resident Ivy Leigh Lee, 26, turned herself into police, telling Det. Brian Boetz she thought she hit a deer on Highway 180 between Fort Wolters military base and Allsup’s the night before.

Boetz said Lee acknowledged drinking with a friend at a Mineral Wells bar and the two were on their way to Weatherford when the accident occurred.

Officers received an anonymous call saying Lee was the person driving the vehicle which hit Daugherty. She was ultimately charged with Collision Involving Death, booked into Parker County Jail and released on a $25,000 bond, Sept. 23.

Under Texas law, a collision involving death carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison and a fine not to exceed $10,000. Lee had not been indicted as of press time.

Daugherty’s family members said he was a long-haul gravel truck driver and most recently a client at the rehabilitation center. He enjoyed music from the 50s, 60s and 70s and liked to dance, loved ones added.
