A brand new Palo Pinto Press sign is finally in place after several weather delays.
It replaces the original which was donated by the newspaper’s loyal ambassador, Wanda Harley.
The new sign was given by an anonymous donor in memory of Darlene Garrett, Mineral Wells historian and an ardent supporter of the free press. Thanks to Phil Garrett and Tracy Cox for allowing the sign to be installed in their mother’s memory.
And a huge shout out to 180 Signs located in the Brazos Mall for free installation and courteous service. You folks are the best.
The new sign is better fitted to the backing and will hopefully withstand even extreme winds.
This Ole Heifer is here to attest, the Press (and indeed the entire community) would not be as vibrant and progressive as is the case today were it not for folks like those in the Harley and Garrett families.
There are few if any Palo Pinto County residents who will ever have the historical perspective of Professor Darlene Garrett. Her contributions, both personal and academic, are responsible for the continued success of many organizations including the Junior History Club and the Mineral Wells Heritage Association.
And when it comes to faith, Elder Wanda Harley is a role model for more than a few of us. She represents, in this writer’s humble opinion, the large number of our citizens who live in faith and practice their religious and philosophical values in their everyday lives.
It would not be far fetched to opine, the new sign at the Press is not a bad metaphor for exactly what the United States of America needs today: Historical perspective, constant renewal and progress — even in the face of ill and destructive winds — and the hope and faith the free press will continue to report the news from the point of view of the general public, particularly on the local level.
