Rams and Eagles feel like old rivals in first meet up in 4A

The Rams played a hard fought battle on the gridiron against top ranked Brock last Friday night at Ram Stadium.

The showdown was highly anticipated by many Ram fans and high school football fans alike. Rams Head Coach Cody Worrell and several members of his staff were a part of the early days of Brock Eagles football under Worrell’s father, Chad Worrell who was the head coach of Brock when the football program started.

If you’ve been around Mineral Wells football for a number of years, you might remember the old Mineral Wells vs. Weatherford showdowns from Miller Stadium which was a huge rivalry game, with the teams being so close in proximity and the competitive nature of both teams and towns. It was noticed that this matchup between the Rams and Eagles had a similar feel to it, pretty much from the moment you walked into the stadium. It should be a fun game for seasons to come.

Brock is new to 4A this season, but never missed a beat in the transition and is still one of the top contenders in Texas, but Mineral Wells has been impressive this season as well, as they settle into Worrell’s game plan and new staff. The Rams have been great on both sides of the ball but have shown great strength on the defensive side which showed during the game against Brock. Despite allowing 21 points, only 14 of those came from the Brock offense who is scoring an average of 41 points per game this season. The other seven points came from a special teams touchdown in the second quarter.

The Rams saw a couple of opportunities to put points on the board, but two missed field goals and an interception really hurt the Rams but overall, the Rams played well and played a complete game, proving they can compete with the best of the best and are not the same team from recent seasons. They showed a new mentality, a new desire to win, and I think we will see a lot of winning happen going forward.

Leading the offense was quarterback Owen Gadd, who for the second week, gave us all a scare after a hard hit. Gadd seemed to be shaken up, and had the Rams warming up their backup QB, but Gadd showed his resilience yet again and came back into the game after a few minutes with the trainers on the Mineral Wells sideline. Gadd threw for 80 yards, and rushed for 19 more, completing 11 of 21 pass attempts. Jackson Hicks stepped in and completed a 42-yard pass for the offense as well as the Rams tried to shake things up. The receiver on the other end of the long Hicks pass was Kadin Kaspar, who led the receivers with 74 yards. Kayden Montalvo, Jaidun Fisher, and Preztynn Harrison all caught passes for the Rams as well. Six Rams got involved in the run game, again showing the depth the Rams have on the offense.

The Rams will travel to Graham for a match up with another top ranked team in the Graham Steers, which has become a bit of a rivalry game and another highly anticipated game for the Rams and their fans. The communities are even getting involved in the fun, with local pastors and high school football fans from each town going head-to-head on a Graham radio show betting a new haircut on the game, loser has to shave his head. Playing in Graham will be no easy thing, but the Rams have proven they are up for the challenge and aren’t backing down from anyone, something we have missed as Ram fans.

Ahead of the game, the Rams and Mineral Wells ISD recognized the MW Youth Sports Association Rams and Ram cheerleaders by giving them the opportunity to take the field with their high school counterparts, welcoming the Rams on to the field.
