Storm takes a toll on Mineral Wells, Mingus and Strawn

Staff Reports

PALO PINTO COUNTY – The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch until 9 p.m., and a flood watch through 10 p.m., tonight in Palo Pinto County.

Last night, severe weather was responsible for power outages, flooding and damaged property countywide, including Mineral Wells, Mingus and Strawn.

“The primary damage was seen down South Keller Road (in Mineral Wells),” Emergency Management Coordinator Chad Jordan said. “The National Weather Service has confirmed that straight-line winds are what was experienced with gusts up to 60 mph.”

Straight-line winds are powerful, horizontal winds that move in a straight path, unlike tornadoes which rotate. They can reach speeds of over 100 mph and can cause extensive damage.

Jordan said the main impact was to trees, but there were a few roofs and fences damaged with no reported injuries. Precinct 1 County Commissioner Richard Ralls was out as early as 1 a.m. removing debris for access down South Keller Road, he added.

Residents reported downpours and flooding between Mingus and Strawn. Severe winds took out trees in Mt. Marion Cemetery in Strawn.

Officials said people should prepare for the hazardous weather forecasted to be on its way.
